How does sclerotherapy work?
To make spider veins disappear, Dr. Huynh injects a special solution called a sclerosing solution, into the veins. The glycerine with lidocaine solution causes the fibrosis by affecting the vein's lining. The veins will disappear in a short amount of time, leaving you with younger, smoother looking skin.
What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?
It is common for sclerotherapy patients to experience some discomfort at the injection sites, but serious side effects are extremely rare. Itching, discoloration, allergic reaction, and pain are a few of the risks of this procedure. Dr. Huynh will go over all the possible side effects and rates of occurrence during your free sclerotherapy consultation.
Am I a good sclerotherapy candidate?
Chances are "yes" as most patients who visit us for a sclerotherapy consultation make great candidates. However, you will need a thorough evaluation before Dr. Huynh can give you the green light for treatment. If you have unwanted spider veins, and are not pregnant or nursing, you may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy. If you have uncontrolled diabetes, a history of deep vein thrombosis, skin infection, or are an anticoagulant therapy, sclerotherapy may not be recommended.
What can I expect during the healing process?
You will experience some discomfort following injection, but it is easily managed with over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also expect some bruising and swelling at the site, but both should subside within a few weeks. The injected site will appear bruised and swollen for a few days. Dr. Huynh may recommend bandaging to control swelling, and most patients are back to normal activities within two to three days.
How many sclerotherapy sessions will I need?
Your recommended number of sessions and length of treatment times will depend on the amount of spider veins you need to remove. A typical treatment usually takes about 30 minutes.
